What are we looking for?

Responsible for championing SHE&S at the site, including planning, developing, and coordinating SHE&S activities, reporting, training and education, and process improvements. Position reports to Monroe, NC Director of Operations with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Corporate Director Environmental Affairs and Safety, Health and Security. This individual will lead progressive safety and environmental programs that will drive a culture of SHE & S engagement and accountability as well as meet or exceed regulatory compliance, corporate and site goals.

Your tasks and responsibilities...

  • Provide SHE technical and regulatory expertise, mentoring, teaching and coaching for the Site.
  • Lead site efforts to maintain compliance with all SHE regulatory requirements and conformance with all OMNOVA SHE Management Systems, including Performance Standards requirements
  • Track and analyze SHE data and communicate results and trends with a focus towards continuous improvement opportunities
  • Perform audits and inspections of plant operations and programs to ensure compliance with standards applicable to the plant (Environmental, Safety/PSM, Responsible Care, ISO 9001, TSCA, RMP, etc.), and to ensure safe operations; provide plant leadership and guidance in these areas.
  • Lead the site SHE Culture transformation in partnership with the local Site Leadership
  • Be an integral part of the plant leadership team which requires the individual to: develop SHE&S annual operating and strategic plans; coordinate and interact with other department managers; and serve as facilitator for the site central safety committee.
  • Coordinate and assist in the preparation of required federal, state and local reporting for the plant. Reports may include Title V air emission inventories, compliance certifications, annual waste, NPDES and POTW, Tier II and TRI reports, etc.

Who you are...



  • Bachelors degree required in Engineering, Science, Safety Environmental, or other related field
  • 5-7 years of experience required in manufacturing industry with SHE&S regulatory knowledge experience in culture development and implementing a SHE management system
  • CSP or ASP Certification or willingness to obtain in 2 years
  • Ability to confidently drive Safety Culture transformation and then sustain by engaging all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrate SHE leadership with effective people influencing skills and conflict management
  • Technical problem solving skills- ability to show effective Problem identification and Causal Effect Skills
  • Ability to identify trends and anticipate consequences to lead focused action and resolution Lead or participate in incident investigations to identify system failures and appropriate corrective actions. Risk rank and track all SHE&S corrective/preventive actions
  • Clearly and succinctly communicates in a variety of settings (verbal, written, and presentation/training)
  • Ability to collaborate within a cross-functional organization and leverage resources, business acumen
  • Must be knowledgeable in the following areas: OSHA, Workers’ Compensation, CAA, CWA, RCRA, TSCA, SARA, EPCRA, and DOT rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge in current and future policies, practices, trends and information affecting the organization
  • Microsoft computer applications (word processing, spreadsheet, and database), technical/program writing, training and presentations skills, project management.
  • Manage the facility workers’ compensation claims in collaboration with the HR department
  • Manages the site solvent waste recovery and disposal efforts as well as all other site waste programs.
  • Experience in the chemical / pharmaceutical / printing industry preferred. Oversight of multiple plants a plus.
  • Experience in dealing with regulatory agencies; strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Must be available for SHE&S leadership on all active shifts as required for training and communication. Must be available and on-call for emergency response.
